QR Island

Mat Barnes and Eddie Blake of C.A.N have created a QR island for Dezeen Space; a multi-functional, experimental space, hosting a pop-up gallery, store, video studio and micro-event space.

Whether or not they will become mainstream anytime soon, QR codes have so much potential from a design perspective. This Hornby model railway styled island, that can be read by a smartphone as a QR code when viewed from above, is a fine example.

Rethink Scholarship

With a record breaking two days of sun during all of July, this summer has actually been quite good; an improvement on recent years if you ask me. Unfortunately, summer is now over and September has arrived. This of course can only mean one thing; the start of uni. Even as we speak, universities all across the UK are preparing to open, welcoming back students to the new academic year.So for all of our new Art & Design students who are just about to start a new course, I thought I’d post a few inspirational videos that might help you during your studies. The Rethink videos were created by Rory O’Sullivan (with help from Jordan Cohen and Simon Bruyn) to encourage students to apply for the 2011 and 20101 scholarship award at Langara College.Pretty incredible, right? I find when ever you are in need of some advice, these videos can act as a nice substitute for your favourite tutor.

You can check out the rest of Rory’s videos at his Vimeo
and his Cargo Collective website.

Alternatively, you can visit www.rethinkcanada.com for more information on the Langara College scholarship, previous winners and how to apply.

Candyvore letterpress print

Our next artist is an Oil painter, illustrator, type lover and self confessed computer geek from Austin, Texas. I recently discovered Shyama Golden’s work via tumblr; becoming an instant fan.

In this post we focus on Shyama’s very colourful, Candyvore letterpress print. We also take a peek at her amusing Llama business cards. Why a Llama? I hear you ask. Well because of her name, of course. “The ‘y’ is silent, as in Shama-Llama.” The independent designer based in downtown Austin, describes herself as a one woman shop for art and design.

Shyama’s work incudes fine art and interactive design, with her fluent illustrative style offering a crisp, tactile feel to her designs.

She works for a wide range of clients with her work published in Texas Monthly, Austin Monthly, LA Magazine, and Cincinnati Monthly to name a few.

You can view all of Shyama’s studio art and web/print design projects on her website www.shyamagolden.com

Playing With Moon Photography

Selecting aperture priority, tweaking your depth of field, making that unbelievably difficult decision about whether to use a wide angle or fish eye lens (fish eye! All day everyday, baby). Yep, taking photographs can be very complex and stressful. On the other hand, when you’re able to produce images as impressive as the ones below, it’s certainly worth it.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play with the moon? Well, In these photos amateur photographer Laurent Lavedera who is also an astronomer, has shown how people can play with the moon. Combining a love for astronomy and photography, the graduate of the Faculty of Physics has created a collection of photographs titled “Moon game.”

The photos were taken on the beach of Tréguennec, a spot where Lavender and his companion, Sabine Sannier, (the model in the pictures) regularly set up their tripod to snap the lunar disc.

The couples creativity is clear to see as a range of fun, playful and sporty poses feature throughout the gallery. The astronomers imagination is complemented by Sabine and her graphic design background, resulting in the fruit of symbiosis between a scientific and inventive mind.

Not only has Laurent now released a book, the Frenchman has also introduced these photographs of lunar games (and some other more classical photographs of the Moon) to different authors; bloggers, writers, scientists and journalists. Each of them choosing a photograph to write about in the style of their choice (poem, dialogue, history, cogitation, etc).

Impressive stuff, ay? Excuse me as I go and dust the cobwebs off my Nikon D40.
